Company History

Spacenet is founded by the Southern Pacific Railroad as a communications subsidiary called the Southern Pacific Satellite Company (SPSC).

GTE acquires SPSC and renames it GTE Spacenet Corporation. For the next 11 years, GTE Spacenet manages a satellite fleet and provides international satellite services for video, voice and data.

GTE's merger with Contel adds the significant satellite assets and services of Contel ASC to GTE Spacenet.

The move brings together GE’s satellite businesses, with the in-orbit satellites controlled by GE Americom and the network services business (ground equipment and service operations) provided by Spacenet.

Spacenet acquires Tridom Corporation, another satellite network services company, from AT&T Corp.

Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. acquires Spacenet from GE Americom and the company is renamed Spacenet Inc. GE Americom retains the satellite fleet assets; GE Americom later is sold to SES and is renamed SES Americom.

Spacenet launches StarBand Communications Inc., the first provider of two-way broadband satellite service for home and small office users in the United States.

Spacenet debuts its innovative Connexstar commercial-grade shared-hub satellite WAN services for small and medium-sized enterprises

Spacenet becomes the first major US satellite operator to offer hybrid VSAT and terrestrial networks.

Spacenet acquires StarBand Communications Inc. and merges the two operations for greater flexibility and efficiency. Spacenet also introduces a global services footprint and advanced solutions for business continuity and disaster recovery.

Spacenet launches a services partnership with Cisco, and assembles an experienced new management team to lead the company toward new markets and greater growth.
