Our Beginnings
In 1974, a small group of entrepreneurial engineers formed COM DEV with the goal to become the leading supplier of advanced microwave hardware to a newly forming satellite industry. The company’s early innovations in the area of filter technology are credited with helping to bring about the economic viability of commercial communications via satellite. Since that time, over 600 spacecraft have been built with COM DEV hardware onboard, making the company one of the world’s most experienced and largest space industry suppliers. Revenues in 2006 were $153M with 900 employees.

COM DEV USA was established to respond to a need for a secure, stable and sophisticated domestic supplier to US National Security programs. Thirty years of space industry know-how in the form of design software, processes, automation, management systems and business practices have been transferred to the new location in El Segundo, California. Our new team consists of US space industry professionals able to exploit this technology without international export constraints.

Hardware and Services
The two core businesses of COM DEV USA are space qualified passive microwave hardware and engineering services. From stand alone microwave components to densely integrated subsystems, COM DEV USA’s capability spans frequencies from UHF to V-Band, including both input and output power levels. Proprietary software tools enable the rapid simulation and analysis of the most demanding performance functions. These designs tools are so exact that space flight units can be manufactured directly from CAD drawings eliminating the cost and schedule impact of engineering iterations. Our success on US Government programs such as TDRSS, GOES, AEHF and MUOS have validated these processes and techniques for the most challenging high performance applications.

COM DEV USA plays a pivotal role early in the system design process by providing engineering services to satellite prime contractors both pre- and post- contract award. Payload architecture analysis, trade studies, performance simulations, hardware requirement definition and procurement services all leverage the tools and know-how developed to provide state-of-the-art hardware solutions.
